Bing Tests Bold HTTPS Labels Inside Search Snippets

Microsoft Bing is testing a small visual change that makes one part of a search result URL unusually prominent: the letters “HTTPS.” In the observed version, the protocol is rendered in bold while the rest of the displayed URL remains comparatively understated.

The test was reported on September 4 by Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable after Sachin Patel shared a screenshot of the treatment. The screenshot shows the effect on sponsored results, and Schwartz said he was unable to reproduce it himself.

That limitation matters. There is currently evidence of a Bing interface test affecting paid search results, but not enough evidence to say Microsoft has rolled the design out broadly or extended it to organic listings. Schwartz suggested that organic results could eventually receive the same treatment, but that remains speculation rather than an observed or announced change.

The test emphasizes the protocol rather than the domain

Search-result URLs contain several pieces of information that compete for attention: the domain, path, breadcrumb structure and, depending on the interface, the protocol. Search engines have spent years simplifying those elements because users generally care more about where a result comes from than the technical syntax used to reach it.

Bing's experiment moves briefly in the opposite direction. By bolding HTTPS, Microsoft makes a normally utilitarian part of the URL visually distinct. The domain is still present, but the secure-protocol marker receives stronger typographic emphasis.

The change is subtle enough that many users may never consciously register it. Yet search interfaces are built from exactly these small visual decisions. A bold label can change what a person notices first even when no underlying ranking, destination or advertising mechanism has changed.

The observed results are sponsored

The most important factual boundary around this story is the result type. The screenshot published by Search Engine Roundtable shows sponsored listings. It does not demonstrate that Bing is currently bolding HTTPS in standard organic snippets.

Microsoft Advertising distinguishes between the URL shown to the user and the actual destination behind an ad. Its Ad Library API documentation, for example, defines a DisplayUrl as the URL displayed by the advertisement and a DestinationUrl as the actual linked destination.

That means Microsoft has presentation flexibility around the visible URL in an ad without changing where the click leads. Bolding the protocol is therefore best understood as a user-interface experiment around an existing display element, not a technical change to HTTPS or ad destinations.

Until an organic example is independently observed, the test should remain described as a sponsored-result experiment.

HTTPS is already the normal state of the modern web

The unusual aspect of emphasizing HTTPS in 2026 is that secure connections are no longer exceptional. For most mainstream websites and online services, HTTPS is the expected baseline rather than a differentiating feature.

Browsers have also changed how they communicate connection security. Earlier interfaces often used prominent lock icons or explicit “secure” indicators. Modern browser design tends to treat HTTPS as normal and devote stronger warnings to insecure or problematic connections instead.

That makes Bing's choice interesting from a search-interface perspective. The test is not introducing a new security capability; it is increasing the visual prominence of information that was already present in the displayed URL.

Microsoft has experimented with security cues before

Schwartz notes that Bing has tested different HTTPS treatments over the years, including lock icons. The new version is considerably more restrained. Instead of adding another graphical element to the snippet, Microsoft can communicate the same concept through typography alone.

That has practical interface advantages. A bold protocol consumes almost no additional horizontal or vertical space, requires no new icon to be interpreted and can be applied consistently across different result layouts.

Whether users actually understand or value the emphasis is another question. Someone familiar with web protocols may interpret bold HTTPS as a security cue. Many other users may simply see an oddly emphasized piece of the URL without assigning it any meaning.

Why emphasize HTTPS in an advertisement?

Paid search results require trust because the search engine is asking users to click a commercially placed destination. Making HTTPS more visible could be intended to provide a lightweight reassurance signal before the click.

That interpretation is plausible, but Microsoft has not publicly explained the purpose of this specific test. There is no basis for saying the company is deliberately trying to improve click-through rate, advertiser trust or security perception unless Microsoft confirms that objective.

It is equally possible that Bing is simply evaluating URL readability or experimenting with visual hierarchy in sponsored snippets. Search engines routinely test small presentation changes and measure how users respond.

Microsoft itself notes in its Bing transparency material that features can be modified, tested, removed or adjusted as the company evaluates their performance and usefulness. A bold HTTPS label fits comfortably within that continuous experimentation model.

The change does not make an ad safer by itself

A prominent HTTPS label should not be confused with an endorsement of the advertiser. HTTPS means the connection between the user and the website is encrypted and that the certificate presented for the domain can be validated. It does not establish that every claim on the page is accurate or that every business behind an HTTPS site is trustworthy.

Fraudulent, misleading or low-quality websites can also use valid HTTPS certificates. Modern certificate issuance is widely accessible, which is beneficial for web security but means the protocol cannot function as a general quality badge.

If Bing is using bold HTTPS as a trust cue, the distinction matters. The label can communicate connection security, but users should not interpret it as evidence that Microsoft has independently guaranteed the commercial reliability of the destination.

Advertisers should not treat this as an optimization lever

There is also no evidence that advertisers can opt into the format, bid for it or influence whether HTTPS appears in bold. The observed presentation appears to be controlled by Bing's search interface.

For Microsoft Advertising users, that means there is currently nothing specific to optimize around the typography. Advertisers should continue following standard landing-page security and URL practices rather than attempting to manipulate how the protocol is displayed.

The useful thing to monitor is whether the treatment becomes widespread enough to affect how users scan ads. If Bing consistently makes HTTPS more prominent, it could slightly alter the visual hierarchy of sponsored results even though advertisers have not changed their copy.

Small SERP experiments can still matter

Search-result design changes rarely need to be dramatic to influence behavior. Bolding a few characters, changing a favicon, removing a site name or altering spacing can affect what users notice and how quickly they identify a result.

Bing has been particularly active with snippet presentation tests. Just two days before this HTTPS sighting, Search Engine Roundtable documented another Bing experiment in which site names were removed from some search-result snippets, leaving the URL more exposed.

Those experiments point toward an ongoing effort to refine how source identity is communicated. One test reduces the prominence of a site-name label; another increases the prominence of the protocol. Neither is enough on its own to establish a permanent redesign, but together they show that Bing is actively reconsidering the small informational layer above or around result titles.

Organic results remain an open question

The temptation with interface tests is to generalize quickly. A screenshot from a sponsored result can look like evidence of a broader Bing SERP redesign, especially when paid and organic snippets share visual conventions.

That conclusion would go beyond the current evidence. Schwartz explicitly framed organic application as a possibility rather than something he had observed, and he was unable to reproduce even the sponsored variation at the time of reporting.

The next useful evidence would therefore be straightforward: additional independent sightings, especially on organic results, or an official Microsoft statement explaining the experiment. Until then, the scope should remain narrow.

This is a visual test, not an HTTPS policy change

Nothing in the observed experiment suggests Microsoft has changed its technical requirements for indexing, ranking or advertising based on HTTPS. The test concerns how a URL is rendered to the searcher.

That distinction is important for SEO teams. There is no evidence here of a new ranking signal, no new security requirement and no reason to expect that bold HTTPS confers an advantage on one site over another. Websites should already use HTTPS for security and modern web compatibility regardless of whether a search engine chooses to emphasize the protocol visually.

The story is therefore about presentation rather than optimization. Bing is testing whether a tiny piece of technical syntax deserves more visual weight inside a search snippet.

For now, that experiment has been seen in sponsored results only. If bold HTTPS begins appearing consistently in organic listings as well, it would become a broader Bing design change worth reassessing. Until that evidence arrives, the safest conclusion is the narrow one: Microsoft is testing the label, and the test is more visible than its implications are currently clear.
