ChatGPT Changed How It Searches the Web — And Reddit Lost 86% of Its Citations
Reddit did not suddenly become a worse source in August. Yet its visible footprint inside ChatGPT Search collapsed in a matter of days. According to Promptwatch’s original tracking data, Reddit accounted for an average 3.83% of citations in citation-bearing ChatGPT Search responses between July 18 and August 7, 2026. From August 14 to 17, that share averaged just 0.52% — an 86.4% relative decline.
The headline number is striking, but the more important signal may sit one layer earlier in the system. Promptwatch separately observed a major change in ChatGPT’s query fan-out behavior on August 8. The share of background searches using the site: operator jumped from roughly 0.37% to 16.8% in one day, while the average number of searches per response increased from about 1.08 to 1.83. In other words, ChatGPT appeared to start adding far more searches explicitly scoped to named domains instead of relying only on broader web queries.
Retrieval happens before the citation
This distinction matters because AI visibility is often discussed as if citations were simply a new form of ranking. They are not. Before an LLM can cite a page, a retrieval system has to decide where to look, which queries to generate, which sources to retrieve and which evidence deserves to survive into the final answer. A publisher can therefore lose citation visibility without changing its content at all if the retrieval layer changes the set of domains it chooses to investigate.
Promptwatch argues that the rise of domain-scoped searches provides a plausible mechanism for Reddit’s decline. A system looking for official product information, documentation or first-party facts may deliberately query a company, institution or specialist publisher directly. A broad discussion platform is less likely to be the named target of that kind of search. But the timing is not proof of causation. Search Engine Journal has highlighted an important gap: the biggest Reddit drop occurred around August 14, six days after the fan-out change, and Promptwatch itself has cautioned that a collection issue cannot be completely excluded.
The change appears unusually ChatGPT-specific
The cross-engine comparison makes the story more interesting. Promptwatch measured a much gentler Reddit decline in Google’s AI surfaces over the same period: approximately 11% in AI Overviews and 30% in AI Mode, rather than ChatGPT’s abrupt 86% fall. That does not tell us exactly what changed inside ChatGPT, but it weakens the idea that Reddit simply became less valuable to every AI search system at the same time.
This fits a pattern we have already seen in NetContentSEO’s own experiments. A NetContentSEO test: does retrieval explain engine-specific visibility?
The Reddit data suggests a useful next experiment. Rather than asking only whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or another system knows NetContentSEO, we should run a fixed set of fresh prompts across retrieval-enabled engines and record three things separately: whether the site is retrieved, whether the entity is correctly recognized and whether a NetContentSEO page receives a visible citation. Repeating the same prompt set over time would let us distinguish a change in model knowledge from a change in source selection.
The key hypothesis is that engine-specific visibility may begin before generation. If one system routinely expands a question into searches that target domains like ours while another system’s retrieval strategy never reaches the site, better prose alone cannot explain the difference. The publisher is competing not only to be considered authoritative after retrieval, but to become a destination the retrieval system thinks to search in the first place.
That is the larger lesson from Reddit’s collapse. AI visibility is not simply about becoming a trusted source and waiting for citations to accumulate. Retrieval architecture can silently redraw the map of which sources are even considered. For publishers, the durable strategy is therefore broader than chasing one platform or one citation pattern: build a crawlable, clearly defined, topic-specific body of first-party information, measure each AI engine independently, and watch the retrieval layer as closely as the answers it ultimately generates.
