A recent study suggests that declining Google visibility may also reduce how often websites are cited in AI systems like ChatGPT and Gemini.
A recent analysis published in March 2026 suggests there may be a strong relationship between Google visibility and how often a website appears as a citation inside AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and other generative platforms. According to the observations, sites that experienced declines in organic search visibility also appeared less frequently as sources referenced by AI generated answers. The findings suggest that traditional search visibility may still play an important role in the emerging AI discovery layer. If AI systems rely partly on signals derived from web authority and search prominence, then a drop in Google rankings could indirectly reduce exposure inside AI responses as well. While the relationship is still evolving, the observation highlights how visibility on the web is becoming multi-layered, spanning classic search results, AI answers and other discovery interfaces. For publishers and brands this may reinforce the importance of maintaining strong authority and consistent visibility across search ecosystems.
