Microsoft Bing has been spotted placing a “Verify you are human” challenge between a search request and the search results, adding another potential obstacle for systems that collect SERPs automatically. The observed screen asks the user to complete one final step before continuing and, in the example shared publicly, presents a checkbox-style human-verification challenge.

The sighting was reported by Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable on September 18, 2026, based on a screenshot shared by Sachin Patel. Schwartz said he could not reproduce the behavior himself. That limitation is important: there is currently no evidence in the report that every Bing user is receiving the challenge, no published explanation from Microsoft for what triggers it, and no basis for describing it as a universal Bing rollout.

The verification appears before the SERP

The placement is what makes the observation technically interesting. According to the reported example, the verification screen appears after a user initiates a search but before Bing displays the results. The user is told to complete a challenge to continue, with the observed version requiring interaction with a “verify you are human” checkbox.

For an ordinary human searcher, an occasional verification step may amount to little more than friction. For automated systems, however, an interstitial challenge can be much more consequential. Rank trackers, SERP scrapers and other automated research systems depend on issuing large numbers of queries and receiving machine-readable search-result pages reliably. A verification layer can interrupt that workflow even when Bing itself remains fully operational for normal users.

Bing's sighting arrives as Google tightens automated access

The timing is notable because Google has also been making automated retrieval of its search results more difficult. In separate reporting on September 18, Search Engine Roundtable documented reports from SEO data providers that Google's recent anti-automation changes were disrupting collection. Nozzle's Derek Perkins said his ability to retrieve Google data had fallen by roughly 80%, while SISTRIX publicly reported reduced collection rates after Google changed the way results were being delivered.

Google has also experimented with explicit human-verification mechanisms. In August, Schwartz documented a Google Search test asking some users to sign in to verify that their searches were coming from a person rather than automated traffic. Those observations provide relevant context for the Bing sighting, but they do not establish that Microsoft and Google are coordinating their approaches or using the same detection technology.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: both major search engines have now been observed putting additional friction in front of traffic that may need to demonstrate it is human before results are delivered. For the SEO data ecosystem, that direction matters regardless of whether the underlying implementations are technically related.

Rank tracking depends on reliable access to search results

Third-party ranking tools cannot measure a search engine without obtaining search-result data somehow. Providers use different collection architectures, geographic infrastructure and methodologies, and some also combine scraped results with other datasets. But large-scale SERP monitoring ultimately requires repeated access to the result pages being measured.

A human-verification checkpoint changes the economics and reliability of that process. If it appears selectively based on traffic patterns, request frequency, IP reputation, authentication state or other signals, automated collectors may need additional infrastructure simply to maintain the same coverage. If requests are blocked rather than merely delayed, datasets can become incomplete until providers adapt.

There is not yet enough evidence to say that Bing's observed challenge is currently degrading major commercial rank trackers. The report does not identify affected vendors or quantify a loss in Bing data collection. That distinction is crucial, especially after the much stronger evidence of collection problems recently reported around Google. At this stage, Bing's verification screen is a warning signal for the data-collection layer rather than proof of a widespread rank-tracking failure.

Human users and automated collectors can experience different versions of Search

The broader issue is that a search engine can work perfectly well for a person while becoming significantly harder for an automated system to observe. This creates an unusual measurement problem for SEO. A human may open Bing, search normally and see a complete SERP, while a monitoring system attempting thousands of queries can encounter verification pages, throttling or other anti-bot mechanisms instead of the results it expects.

When that happens, an SEO tool has to distinguish a ranking change from a collection failure. Missing data should not automatically become a missing ranking. Providers need mechanisms to detect challenge pages and failed responses so those events are flagged, retried or excluded rather than interpreted as legitimate search results.

For SEO teams using Bing data, the same principle applies at the reporting layer. Sudden gaps or unusual ranking movements should be cross-checked before they are treated as real visibility changes, particularly if the tool provider reports collection issues. Bing Webmaster Tools, analytics and other first-party evidence can help establish whether a site's actual search performance changed or whether only the external measurement pipeline did.

Search engines are raising the cost of machine-readable SERPs

The Bing sighting also fits a larger structural trend. Search results have become strategically valuable inputs not only for traditional SEO software but also for AI systems, competitive-intelligence products, data brokers and automated agents. At the same time, search engines have incentives to distinguish normal human usage from high-volume automated extraction, whether for infrastructure protection, abuse prevention, data control or other operational reasons.

The result is an escalating technical boundary around SERP access. Verification challenges are one visible manifestation; changes to result delivery, redirects, query parameters and request handling can create similar friction without presenting a CAPTCHA-like screen to ordinary users. For data providers, each layer can increase the engineering and infrastructure required to keep historical rank-tracking products working as expected.

One observation is not yet a Bing-wide policy

The current evidence still requires caution. Schwartz could not reproduce the Bing screen, Microsoft has not been cited explaining the behavior, and the trigger is unknown. It could be selective, geographically limited, traffic-dependent, experimental or part of an existing abuse-prevention system that has simply become more visible. Calling it a universal new Bing requirement would go beyond what has actually been observed.

What makes the story worth watching is the context. Google is already creating measurable problems for some automated SERP collectors, and now Bing has been observed placing an explicit human-verification gate in front of results. If the behavior becomes more widespread, scraping and rank-tracking providers may face similar access challenges across more than one major search engine.

For SEO professionals, that means the reliability of the measurement layer deserves almost as much attention as the rankings being measured. When a search engine starts asking who is human before showing the SERP, automated tools are no longer passive observers of Search — they are participants in an increasingly active anti-bot negotiation.
