Bing Tests Turning HTTPS Into a Visible Trust Signal in Search Ads

Microsoft Bing is testing a small but unusually deliberate change to the way URLs appear in search ads: the https portion is being shown in bold, giving the secure protocol more visual weight than the rest of the displayed address.

The experiment was spotted by Sachin Patel and reported by Search Engine Roundtable on September 4. In the screenshot shared with the publication, the treatment appears on sponsored search results. Barry Schwartz said he could not reproduce the test himself and noted that a similar presentation might eventually appear in organic listings, but that possibility remains speculation rather than an observed rollout.

The test is subtle enough to be overlooked at first glance. Yet it raises an interesting design question: after years in which browsers and search interfaces have increasingly treated HTTPS as a normal baseline rather than a special badge, why would Bing make the protocol more visible again?

Bing is emphasizing HTTPS without adding another badge

Search engines and browsers have experimented with many ways of communicating secure connections, including lock icons, protocol labels and warnings for pages that do not use encrypted transport. Search Engine Roundtable notes that Microsoft itself has tested HTTPS labels and lock-style treatments in Bing before.

The latest experiment is less intrusive. Instead of adding an icon or a separate “secure” label, Bing simply gives the https text typographic emphasis. The user still sees a normal URL, but the secure protocol becomes the first visual element to stand out.

That matters because interface designers can change perception without adding new claims. Bold type naturally attracts the eye. A user scanning several sponsored results may therefore notice the HTTPS prefix more readily even if Bing never explicitly tells them that one advertiser is safer or more trustworthy than another.

The observed test is in sponsored results, not organic search

The scope of the experiment needs to remain precise. The screenshot reported by Search Engine Roundtable shows sponsored listings. Schwartz wrote that he assumed Microsoft might apply the treatment to organic results too, but he did not report seeing that version.

That distinction is important for both advertisers and SEOs. A paid-search presentation test can be evaluated around ad clarity, user confidence and click behavior without implying any change to organic ranking systems. There is currently no evidence in the reported test that HTTPS has gained a new organic ranking role or that bold formatting is being used broadly across Bing’s unpaid results.

It is also unclear how widely the ad treatment is being tested. The fact that the reporter could not reproduce it suggests that this may be a limited experiment, account cohort, geography-specific test or temporary interface variant.

HTTPS is already part of Microsoft Advertising’s URL infrastructure

The visual experiment does not introduce HTTPS support to Microsoft Advertising. Secure URLs have long been handled by the platform’s advertising infrastructure.

Microsoft’s Advertising API documentation for keyword final URLs states that final URLs must be well-formed addresses beginning with either http:// or https://. Other Microsoft Advertising API objects similarly recognize the HTTPS protocol when processing destination and final URLs.

What is new in the reported test is therefore presentation rather than transport capability. Bing is taking information that already exists in the destination URL and making one component of it more conspicuous to the searcher.

A visible protocol can function as a trust cue without being a formal trust metric

The phrase “trust signal” needs careful handling here. Microsoft has not said that bold HTTPS is an official trust indicator, nor has it announced that the treatment improves ad quality, ranking or click-through rate. There is no published evidence from this experiment showing that users actually respond more favorably to the bold protocol.

But from an interface perspective, emphasizing HTTPS can plausibly operate as a trust cue. Users have been trained for years to associate HTTPS with encrypted browser connections, while modern browsers actively warn about some insecure interactions. Making the protocol visible can therefore remind users that the landing-page connection uses secure transport.

That is not the same as proving that the advertiser itself is reputable. HTTPS protects data in transit between a browser and a server; it does not guarantee that a company is legitimate, that a product is good or that a page contains truthful information. Malicious sites can also obtain HTTPS certificates.

If Bing is testing the styling to improve perceived confidence, the design works by surfacing a technical property that users may recognize—not by certifying the advertiser.

Sponsored results have a stronger reason to communicate destination confidence

There is a practical reason the experiment may have appeared first in advertising. A sponsored result asks a user to move from a search engine to an advertiser’s landing page as part of a commercial interaction. That landing page may ask for payment information, an email address, a phone number or other data.

Search advertising also operates in categories where users can be especially sensitive to legitimacy: finance, travel, software, healthcare, home services and ecommerce. Even a small visual cue that reduces hesitation could be valuable if it affects whether users engage with an ad.

Again, there is no evidence yet that Bing’s bold HTTPS treatment actually changes click behavior. But paid-search interfaces are routinely tested at a granular level precisely because small presentation changes can alter scanning, comprehension and engagement.

The experiment reverses a broader trend toward hiding protocol details

The test is also interesting because much of the modern web interface has moved in the opposite direction. Browsers have spent years simplifying address bars, de-emphasizing technical URL components and reducing the prominence of positive security indicators as HTTPS became commonplace.

The logic behind that evolution is straightforward: secure transport should be expected, not celebrated as an exceptional feature. Users often benefit more from strong warnings when something is wrong than from a permanent badge saying that the normal condition is present.

Bing’s test temporarily reverses that logic inside the search result itself. It takes a technical prefix that many interfaces visually minimize and gives it extra prominence at the moment a user chooses where to click.

That may be less about teaching users what HTTPS means and more about adding a quick visual reassurance to an ad unit competing for attention.

Advertisers should not expect a new optimization lever

If the treatment expands, advertisers whose landing pages already use HTTPS may receive the formatting automatically. Nothing in the reported test suggests that advertisers can opt into bold HTTPS, bid for it or configure it as an asset.

Likewise, switching to HTTPS solely to obtain bold text would be the wrong way to interpret the experiment. Secure transport is already a basic requirement for modern commercial websites for reasons far more important than SERP typography, including privacy, integrity and compatibility with contemporary browser features.

Advertisers should instead make sure that final URLs resolve correctly over HTTPS, redirects are clean, certificates are valid and landing pages do not generate browser security warnings. Those fundamentals matter regardless of whether Bing chooses to bold four characters in a result.

Do not confuse the styling test with an organic SEO change

Because the experiment appears inside a search-results page, it is easy for a visual change to be interpreted as an SEO signal. The available evidence does not support that conclusion.

Search Engine Roundtable observed the bold protocol in sponsored listings. It did not document the same treatment in organic results, and Microsoft has not announced a new HTTPS-related organic ranking change in connection with the experiment.

Even if Bing eventually applies the same styling to unpaid listings, presentation and ranking would still be separate questions. A search engine can change how a URL is rendered without changing how that page is selected or ordered.

For SEOs, the correct response is therefore to watch the interface rather than invent a ranking theory around it.

The real question is whether users still notice HTTPS

If Microsoft is running this as an experiment, one of the most interesting outcomes would be whether modern searchers respond to the protocol at all. HTTPS is now so widespread that many users may treat it as invisible infrastructure. Others may still recognize it as a positive safety cue, particularly in commercial contexts.

Bing can measure that behavior far more directly than outside observers can. An ad experiment can compare engagement between variants, examine whether effects differ by query category or device, and determine whether highlighting the protocol helps or merely adds visual noise.

Until Microsoft publishes anything about the test, however, those possible motivations and outcomes remain interpretations.

A four-letter formatting change can reveal a larger design tension

The bold HTTPS test captures a persistent problem in search-interface design: how much technical information should a search engine expose when users are making rapid decisions?

Too little information can make destinations feel opaque. Too much can clutter results with protocol details that most users do not need. Bing’s experiment tries a middle path by preserving the familiar URL while subtly emphasizing the part associated with encrypted transport.

For now, it is a limited sponsored-results test that could not be consistently reproduced, not a new Bing standard. There is no confirmed organic version, no announced ranking implication and no evidence yet that bold HTTPS changes user behavior.

But the experiment is still worth watching. If Bing keeps the treatment, HTTPS would move from background URL syntax to a deliberately visible part of the ad. That would not make the protocol a guarantee of trust, but it would show that Microsoft believes security information may still have value at the exact moment a searcher decides which commercial result deserves a click.
