Microsoft Bing is testing a more shopping-oriented version of its standard search results page, placing detailed product filters directly in the left-hand sidebar when users run commerce-related searches. The experiment makes the main Bing results interface look noticeably closer to Google's product-heavy SERPs and could reduce the need for shoppers to switch into a dedicated Shopping tab before narrowing a query.
The test was reported by Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable on September 16 after Sachin Patel shared screenshots and video of the interface. Schwartz said he could not reproduce the layout himself, which is an important limitation: this appears to be a restricted Bing experiment rather than a broadly available redesign.
Even at test stage, the interface is worth watching because it changes where product refinement happens. Instead of treating shopping as a separate destination, Bing appears to be experimenting with bringing more of the shopping-navigation experience into the general “All” results page itself.
Shopping refinement is moving into the main SERP
The tested design places product-related filters in a left sidebar alongside the standard Bing results experience. Search Engine Roundtable describes the new interface as substantially more detailed than earlier product refinements Bing has displayed in that area and says it makes Bing's All tab look more like Google's interface for shopping-related queries.
The significance is not merely visual. Filters turn a broad commercial query into a sequence of progressively narrower decisions. A shopper searching for a generic product category can refine what is shown without repeatedly rewriting the query or moving to a different vertical.
That means the main SERP can function less like a static list of documents and more like an ecommerce discovery interface. The user starts with an information-retrieval action but quickly moves into product attributes, comparison and selection.
This is a test, not a Bing-wide rollout
The limited availability needs to remain central to any interpretation of the change. Search Engine Roundtable's reporter could not reproduce the interface, and the evidence currently comes from screenshots and video shared by a user who encountered the experiment. Microsoft has not announced that the sidebar design is rolling out to all Bing users.
That is consistent with how Bing says it develops search features. Microsoft's documentation on how Bing delivers search results explains that new features can be released first to a small set of real users so Microsoft can observe how people interact with them before deciding whether to expand availability.
The safest conclusion, therefore, is not that Bing has redesigned shopping search. It is that Microsoft is actively evaluating whether richer commerce controls belong inside its mainstream search interface.
Bing has experimented with left-side product refinements before
The basic idea is not entirely new. Search Engine Roundtable notes that Bing displayed product refinements on the left side of results as far back as January 2023. The difference in the September 2026 experiment is the apparent depth and prominence of the filtering interface.
That distinction matters because search engines routinely test small interface adjustments that disappear without becoming permanent features. A more elaborate sidebar suggests Microsoft is exploring something broader than a cosmetic refinement: whether a user should be able to conduct much of the shopping-navigation process without leaving the primary results page.
Bing has also been running other commerce experiments throughout 2026, including AI-based recommendations in its Shopping tab, product-detail overlays, pricing on product images and new shopping-panel treatments. The left-sidebar test fits into that larger pattern of making product discovery more interactive and decision-oriented.
The boundary between web search and shopping search is getting thinner
Microsoft describes Bing Shopping as a way to discover products from multiple sellers, compare prices and access reviews and offers. Traditionally, dedicated shopping verticals have provided richer filtering than the main web results because the underlying data is structured around products rather than documents.
Bringing detailed filters into the main SERP weakens that separation. A query does not need to begin explicitly inside a shopping vertical for Bing to recognize commercial intent and expose product-specific controls.
This is strategically important because many ecommerce searches begin as ordinary web searches. A person may type a product name, category or problem rather than deliberately selecting Shopping first. If the main results page immediately offers structured refinement, Bing can keep that user in a commerce-oriented flow from the first query.
Why the Google-like comparison matters
Search Engine Roundtable characterizes the experiment as more Google-like because Google has increasingly integrated shopping features into general search results rather than confining product discovery to a separate tab. The comparison does not mean the two interfaces or ranking systems are identical, but it highlights a shared product direction.
Search engines are becoming more active in helping users refine commercial intent. Instead of returning ten links for “running shoes” and expecting the shopper to perform every comparison on retailer websites, a search interface can expose product modules, price information, images, ratings and filters before the click.
That creates a richer user experience, but it also changes the competitive environment for merchants. The search engine becomes more involved in deciding which attributes are visible and how users narrow the market before selecting a result.
Product data becomes more important when the SERP itself can filter
For ecommerce SEO, richer filtering reinforces the importance of accurate product attributes. A filter can only narrow products effectively when the search system has enough structured or reliably extractable information to understand characteristics such as brand, category, price, color, size or other relevant dimensions.
That does not mean Bing's experimental sidebar is necessarily populated from one specific merchant feed or schema field; Microsoft has not provided technical implementation details for this test. The broader implication is that product discovery increasingly depends on search engines understanding items as structured entities rather than merely ranking pages containing matching words.
Merchants therefore have a reason to keep catalog information consistent across product pages, structured data and commerce feeds. If a search experience can filter the result set before the user visits a retailer, missing or ambiguous attributes can become a visibility problem rather than just a merchandising inconvenience.
Search results are becoming interfaces for narrowing decisions
The Bing experiment also belongs to a wider change in search design. AI answers, shopping filters, product comparisons and agentic commerce all move search engines away from being passive directories of destinations. The interface increasingly helps perform parts of the user's task before a website visit occurs.
Shopping filters are a relatively conventional example of that shift. They do not require generative AI or an autonomous agent. Yet the underlying principle is similar: the search engine is helping transform an initial request into a smaller set of actionable options.
For publishers and merchants, that means the SERP is no longer just the place where visibility is won. It is increasingly the place where choices are narrowed. A product can be technically present in search while disappearing from consideration after the user applies a filter.
The impact on clicks could cut in two directions
If Microsoft eventually expands this interface, richer filters could improve traffic quality for merchants because users arriving at a product page may already have specified more of what they want. A shopper who has narrowed by attributes before clicking can be closer to a purchasing decision than someone arriving from a broad category query.
At the same time, more decision-making inside Bing could reduce the number of products and websites a shopper needs to visit. Search engines that answer more questions and provide more comparison tools can concentrate attention on the smaller set of options that survives the interface's refinement process.
The net effect would depend on implementation, ranking and user behavior. Because the sidebar remains a limited test, there is no basis yet for making traffic forecasts. What can be observed is the product direction: Bing is testing whether the main SERP should do more of the work traditionally associated with a shopping results page.
A small Bing test with a larger ecommerce implication
There is no guarantee Microsoft's September experiment will become Bing's default shopping interface. Search tests frequently change, expand, contract or disappear, and the current layout is not reproducible for all users. Treating it as a completed rollout would overstate the available evidence.
But the experiment is still revealing. Bing is testing a main search page where commercial queries can immediately expose richer shopping controls, making the boundary between web results and product discovery less distinct. If that direction continues, ecommerce visibility will increasingly depend not only on ranking for a query but on remaining eligible and relevant as the user refines that query inside the search engine itself.
For SEO teams, the test is another reason to monitor the interface around rankings rather than rankings alone. Search engines are steadily adding layers that can answer, compare, filter and eventually act on user intent. Bing's new sidebar may be a modest experiment, but it points toward a SERP that behaves more like a shopping application before the user ever leaves the search results.
