Google’s August 2026 spam update has finished rolling out.
According to Google’s Search Status Dashboard, the update started on August 18 and completed on August 21, lasting roughly two days and 16 hours. It affected ranking, and Google now lists the incident as closed.
The timing is interesting. Search results had already shown noticeable volatility earlier in August, including significant movement around August 12–13. That movement happened before the confirmed spam update, so it shouldn’t automatically be attributed to it.
There is also an important distinction worth keeping in mind as AI-generated publishing continues to grow: a spam update is not the same thing as an “AI content update.”
The useful question for publishers isn’t whether a page was written with AI assistance. It’s whether large-scale publishing is producing genuinely useful information or simply creating more pages designed to capture search visibility without adding much value.
Now that the rollout is complete, the interesting part begins: watching which types of sites gained or lost visibility and whether any consistent patterns emerge.
For publishers, this is probably a better moment for observation than panic.
